Getting Dizzy

A Conversation Between the Artistic Research of Dizziness and Somatic Architecture

Abstract

This open conversation brings artistic, theoretical, architectural and practice-based approaches to the field of dizziness. Proposing the liminal state of dizziness as the suspension of relation, communication and understanding of the self and/or the world, it explicates the concept of dizziness, giving examples from artistic and architectural practice. The authors discuss the impact of dizziness, its possible navigation, and the role Somatic Architecture could play therein. Disorientation and alternative orientation modalities require speculative tools for different environments, socio-political conceptions and bodies able to develop synergistically and in somatic coalescence.

Author Biography

María Auxiliadora Gálvez Pérez, Professor at the EPS Faculty of Architecture San Pablo C.E.U University, Madrid. Director of LSAAP.

María Auxiliadora Gálvez is PhD in Architecture since 2012 and Landscaper. She is also Teacher of the Feldenkrais Method of somatic education by the Feldenkrais Institute (2018).

Since 2016, she develops and direct the “Platform of Somatic for Architecture and Landscape” (PSAAP) and its associated Laboratory (LSAAP). LSAAP is located at the Institute of Technology at the San Pablo C.E.U University (Faculty of Architecture) in Madrid, Spain.

Between 2006 and 2010 she has been Coordinator for Panama in the International Cooperation Program of Social Housing developed by the Andalucian Government.

In 2002 she was selected for the 8th Venice Architecture Biennale and in 2018 her work was part again of the material selected for the Spanish Pavilion at the 16ª Biennale.

She has been distinguished in national and international contests, highlighting the VI, VII and IX editions of EUROPAN.

Her work has been published, among others, in “Natural Artificial” by EXIT.LMI, in the journals UHF, BAUWELT, Summa+, 2G, Deutsche Bauzeitung, Arquitectura Viva or in the monography “Excepto 21. Gálvez+Wieczorek”. Her architecture has been exhibited several times, highlighting “Freshmadrid”, “Génération Europan” and “Gran Vía Laboratory” promoted by the C.O.A.M, The French Institute of Architecture (Paris) and Telefónica Foundation respectively.

She is author of the book “Espacio Somático. Cuerpos Múltiples” (Ediciones Asimétricas, 2019).

As researcher, she has been part in between others of the Scientific Committee of the Congress “Middle-Class Housing in Perspective: From Post-war Construction to Post-millennial Urban Landscape” celebrated in Italy in 2012, or co-director of “We Are All able Bodies. From Sensory Deprivation to Sensory Augmentation” celebrated in Spain in 2018 thanks to the support of the International Ambiances Network.

Nowadays she works in Landscape and Architecture from an embodied point of view and researches the possibilities of movement and cognition in the pedagogy and development of these disciplines developing what she calls “Somatic Architecture”.

She is member of the “International Ambiances Network” (France) and is part also of the research directory of the “Centre for Sensory Studies” (Canada)
